We’re excited to introduce you to our Nonprofit Practice Lead, Ethan Norris! Ethan joined our team in July of 2021 and quickly started making a positive impact with both our nonprofit and education client teams. Ethan is incredibly active in the Salesforce community and does a fantastic job of applying the latest in Salesforce technology to our client’s Salesforce initiatives. Among many accomplishments, Ethan is a 9x certified Salesforce Architect with an impressive background that spans not only Salesforce technology, but also nonprofit strategy, development and operations, as well as risk and regulatory consulting.

We asked Ethan 5 questions so you can get to know more about him and his focus on the nonprofit industry.

Q: Can you tell us about your Salesforce experience and how you’re applying that to nonprofit projects?

A: I’ve been working with Salesforce since 2016 when the nonprofit I was working with decided to implement the platform. It was a game-changing experience for the organization migrating from an archaic fundraising platform, a decades old MS Access database, and of course many different spreadsheets. That experience sparked my interest in the platform and I’ve been passionate about bringing the same positive change to nonprofits ever since!

I’ve designed and built Salesforce solutions for a variety of human focused organizations and industries. As a 9x certified Salesforce Architect, I enjoy solving complex, technical problems, building automation, and improving day-to-day processes for clients so they can focus on their mission.

Q: What are some pain points the nonprofit industry is currently experiencing?

A: The nonprofit industry is unique with respect to software platforms in that each organization is very different! It’s hard for nonprofits to find a system that will provide a 360 degree view of the individuals they serve, donors, volunteers, etc. all in one system.

We’ve helped clients use Salesforce to support Intake and Case Management, Program and Benefit Tracking, RSVP and Attendance Tracking/Automation, Volunteer Management, and so much more, all in one system. Nonprofits often collect many different forms to support these processes which we’ve integrated using tools like Flow, OmniStudio, or FormAssembly to send responses directly into Salesforce and take automated actions from there like sending an email or generating a task. Fundraising is also a cornerstone of our implementations – we see significant value in integrating donation and accounting platforms while automating gift processing to eliminate time-consuming manual data entry.

That’s the beauty of Salesforce in that it can be customized to support the needs of so many different missions.

Q: In your opinion, how does Elevation Solutions provide the most value to nonprofit teams?

A:  While we have skilled Salesforce professionals, our team stands out in a couple ways:

  1. We try to understand the unique underlying processes of every organization we work with and put ourselves in the shoes of clients’ staff and constituents. This is done through our discovery and journey building process and helps to inform not just the build-out of Salesforce but where organizations can improve processes that take place outside of the system to drive efficiency.
  2. Many members of our team, like myself, are prior nonprofit and education industry professionals. This gives us a unique perspective having understood what it means to process donations, fundraise major gifts, write grant proposals, work with Boards of Directors, run special events, etc.

Q: Can you share a fun fact about you?

A: My favorite destination is Vieques, Puerto Rico where my aunt and cousin live with their family. It’s a small island off the coast from the mainland. When I visited I had the chance to kayak and swim in the bioluminescent bay. As one of only a few in the world, the bay gets its name from tiny organisms that produce a bright burst of blue light whenever they come into contact with something else.

Q: What do you do for fun?

A: I love sci-fi movies, tennis, Thai food, music, the outdoors and spending time with family! You can catch me biking on the Chicago lakefront trail or at one of the many live music venues in the city.
